“Stuart’s Coming Out Speech - Queer as Folk (2000)”, A Commemorative Tea Towel celebrating Pride.
Set against the familiar backdrop of a traditional red-check tea towel, the piece features Stuart’s celebrated coming-out speech from Russell T Davies’ groundbreaking drama Queer as Folk. Every word and punctuation mark has been painstakingly reconstructed from newspaper clippings sourced from years of reporting on LGBTQ+ lives.
The clippings span moments of progress and prejudice, visibility and vilification, celebration and backlash. Drawn from headlines, articles, and reports that documented queer communities across generations, the speech is rebuilt from the very language that has been used to describe, debate, support, and condemn LGBTQ+ people.
By transforming these fragments into a declaration of identity, the work reclaims a history of representation and turns it into an act of self-definition.
Printed on one of the most ordinary household objects, the tea towel places queer history within everyday domestic life. The familiar red-check pattern serves as a reminder that queer stories, relationships, and identities have always existed within the fabric of ordinary communities and homes.
All proceeds from sales of the tea towel will be donated to UK registered charity, Not A Phase (1193381).
Not A Phase is a trans-led, grassroots charity committed to uplifting and improving the lives of trans+ adults, through awareness campaigning, social projects and funding trans+ lead initiatives. The charity aims to give the trans+ and gender non-conforming community space to thrive, whilst working with organisations on D&I strategies to promote positive change.
